Hi, what do your parent workshops look like? I teach in a primary autism class and want to get parents more involved. Could you elaborate on what your monthly workshops consist of?

Hi Amanda, thanks for your question. I began the parent workshops as a way to help parents not only get on the same page with us, but also to add more transparency to the special education environment. We invite parents once a month to join us for an hour at the end of the day. This is generally a sensory activity time. We do activities where the parents are working with their child to complete projects that are at times, challenging. We do things that are hands on which encourage parents to see that we must power through some protests and follow through. Sometimes we do gross motor play, like the parachute, and often times it is a hands in the yuck glue and paint. It has been rewarding and helpful to not only allow parents to see how we interact and follow through, but to see how THEY interact and follow through. This has built a wonderful networking opportunity for parents and staff alike... Don't forget to start the workshop with a sign in and 5 minutes or so of teacher talk time.
